September 22, 2014 2 Comments

Tear stains are one of the most recognized blemishes that is often seen in many dogs with white coats, and Maltese dogs are some of the most prevalent. We have all seen these blemishes, and it seems as though nothing helps despite all we attempt to do. Understanding and being able to treat Maltese Tear Stains with little to no effort will not only give our dogs the look that they deserve, but will maintain their health for years to come.

Understanding Maltese Tear StainsMaltese Tear Stains

Maltese tear stains can be caused from one of many things including genetics, stress, environment, and an underlying cause such as Colitis. The nature of the cause may determine the overall treatment method as Tylan Powder is the first treatment of choice. Many specific breeds such as Maltese, Poodles, and Shiz-tzu dogs that have white coats are some of the most common.

Stress, including anxiety is an inhibitor of many things in life including tear stains in dogs. Smaller dogs exhibit this form or psychological response as the dark colored tear stains can become quite evident in lighter coated dogs.  Developing around the eyes itself and especially underneath, these stains that appear as dark tears look as though they are permanent discolorations in the coat itself.

Treatment for Maltese Tear Stains

The number one recommended treatment for Maltese tear stains is Tylan Powder. This treatment of choice is a form of an antibiotic, a derivative of erythromycin, and typically will take care of tear stains in dogs in as little as three weeks. Depending on the cause of the tear stains, Tylan Powder can be easily used as a source of home treatment, has minimal side effects, and is relatively cheap in comparison.

Pill form is one of the most prevalent forms of treating tear stains for Maltese dogs, but due to the bitter taste most dogs do not like it. For instances like this, there are water soluble forms that will easily dissolve the Tylan which will make it easier to administer. Injectable forms of Tylan Powder are also available, but caution should be maintained as it is likely that a localized reaction around the injection site may occur.

Tylan powder will work of there is no underlying cause such as gastro intestinal problems or Colitis. If Tylan does not work after 3-5 weeks of treatment, it is recommended to seek the assistance of a vet as a Culture and Sensitivity test may have to be ordered. This test will help determine the root cause of the Maltese tear stains and will determine a different form of treatment.
